A Novel Idea and Loyola University Talk

 

Normally, with the release of a book, I attend several events to help promote the book, reading passages from it and talking with readers in the audience. In light of the pandemic, in-person events have been halted, so opportunities to present The Color of Jadeite directly to readers have been slim. But I still look for ways to connect to potential readers and writers.

 

Earlier this week, I had the pleasure of presenting some thoughts on book marketing as an author—some things that have worked for me and some that have not—to a class at Loyola University.

 

I also served as judge for a Howard County Community Center flash fiction contest.  This coming Monday, the winner will be revealed during their “A Novel Idea” program, featuring me as a guest author. During the hour-long Webx program, we will enjoy some Great American Novel trivia, talk about fiction writing, and reveal the award-winning entry.

New Book is a Literary Adventure Thriller

I have a new novel coming out this fall!

The Color of Jadeite will be published by Loyola’s Apprentice House Books this fall.

The Color of Jadeite is a literary adventure thriller full of intrigue, romance, treacherous villains, alluring clues, narrow escapes, and surprises around every corner. 

Clive Allen, a suave private eye, ventures throughout China in search of an ancient jadeite tablet from the Ming dynasty. Along the way, he delves into the mysteries of China’s art, history, and culture.

Every bit as captivating as the treasure Clive seeks is the mysterious Wei Wei, an expert on Chinese artifacts who helps the droll detective navigate the most perilous pockets of Beijing, Shanghai, Xi’an, Hangzhou, Suzhou, and beyond.

With sidekicks Salvador and Mackenzie, Clive sets out to find the priceless artifact, outwitting their rivals at almost every turn. Roaring Photo Shoot

My latest novel, Setting the Family Free, is being published by Loyola University's Apprentice House this fall. It may seem like a long time for waiting readers, but there always seems to be a lot to do between contract signing and publication date. 

Designing the book. Selecting a font. Considering formatting issues. Agreeing on matters of style. Bouncing cover concepts off one another. Soliciting reviews and blurbs. And selecting an author photo for the back.

We recently had a roaring good time with a photo shoot for the Setting the Family Free author photo. When we realized getting in a cage with a real lion or tiger was dangerous, photoshopping one in was even more problematic in its own ways, and managing to catch a good shot of a real lion in the backdrop at the zoo or a nature preserve was nearly impossible, I decided to strike a pose (or a few) at the Bayre lion statue in Baltimore's Mount Vernon Square.

I'm pleased to announce that my novel, Setting theFamily Free, is being published by Loyola University's Apprentice House Press in 2019!

What is Setting the Family Free about? Here's a brief teaser:

The loner who collects unusual things. The private reserve of exotic pets released into a rural Ohio community. The estranged wife who loves the animals like family. The caretaker who knows the beasts are dangerous. The Sheriff and his team of experts who must hunt the creatures down. The animal advocate who winces at the spectacle. The celebrity zookeeper who knows what must be done. 

This story expands through the innovative use of multiple narratives, news broadcasts, newspaper articles, press conferences, political tapes, and quotes from experts, eyewitnesses, and those closest to the unfolding events. Who are the heroes; who are the victims? Who gets to decide?
