Here's something really scary: the hazards of work.

The latest issue of the acclaimed literary zine Smile, Hon, You're in Baltimore! from Eight-Stone Press focuses on Occupational Hazards. 

The latest issue features the works of dozens of authors, including D.R. Belz, Bill Hughes, Holly Morse-Ellington, Anthony C. Hayes, Caryn Coyle, Wayne Countryman, William P. Tandy, Rafael Alvarez, Earl Crown, Jeffrey L. Shipley, Fernando Quijano III, Gregg Wilhelm, and many others!

My piece, "Playing in the Sun When I Should Have Been Working in the Cabin" was published in the issue.

An Event Bridging the Arts

This week an article was published in The Examiner about how the Lit and Art Reading Series bridges the arts. 

That's because every Lit and Art event brings together fiction, poetry, nonfiction, live music, original art, wine, refreshments, and conversation. The events take place several times every year at The Watermark Gallery, 100 South Charles Street across from Baltimore's Inner Harbor.

Some of the Lit and Art featured writers from the 2013 series included Madison Smartt Bell, Bathsheba Monk, Jessica Anya Blau, Michael Kimball, Jerry Holt, Lucrecia Guerreo, D. R. Belz, Nathan Leslie, Tom Glenn, Julie Wakeman-Linn, Sue Ellen Thompson, Charles Rammelkamp, Goodloe Byron, Jacob Panic, and many others.

The next Lit and Art at the Watermark events will take place on Sundays, January 26, February 23, March 30, April 27, May 25, and June 29.

The Lit and Art reading series is part of Baltimore Literary Arts Week, which is part of Free Fall Baltimore.

This event is part of Literary Arts Week, a week-long celebration of literary arts programming and writers, poets, and readers, part of Free Fall Baltimore. Created in partnership by CityLit Project, the Greater Baltimore Cultural Alliance, the Maryland State Arts Council and with the participation of the William G. Baker, Jr. Memorial Fund.

Words and Wine Benefit Catonsville Library

Don’t miss the next annual Words and Wine Benefit at the Catonsville Library this Friday, October 11 at 7 p.m. at the Catonsville Library. Tickets are $25 and include not only the opportunity to mingle and chat with some of your favorite local authors as you listen to jazz guitar, but also all the wine you can drink and cheese you can eat. (And you can certainly get your money’s worth out of the wine and cheese—and help the library at the same time!)

This year’s authors include Jen Michalski, Rafael Alvarez, Rob Kasper, Dan Toomy, and a host of others. My wife and I will be there with copies of Tracks and Flightless Goose.

Free Fall Baltimore Presents Literary Arts Week

Free Fall Baltimore is yet another reason to look forward to autumn; the free events are as plentiful as the falling leaves.

The most exciting part of Free Fall Baltimore is Baltimore Literary Arts Week. Readings, performances, even evenings with dead authors. There is a lot going on.

For example, the New Mercury Reading at Mencken House takes place Saturday, October 13 and the 510 Reading at Minas Gallery takes place on Saturday, October 19.

The Poe House is having a “Poe-pen” house as they reopen. The Great Halloween Lantern Parade and Festival is always a big hit. Free museums, theaters, concerts, and more!
