April’s Showers Bring Great Readings

The next Lit and Art at the Watermark takes place on Sunday, April 24 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Watermark Gallery, 100 S. Charles Street, in the Bank of America building across from Baltimore's inner harbor. Come and be showered with some great lit, art, and music.

This is the End (for 2015)

The final Lit and Art of the 2015 season takes place the last Sunday in October—this weekend! Featured readers include D.R. Belz, Shirley J. Brewer, Katherine Cottle, Barbara DeCesare, Tom Glenn, and Barrett Warner.

Limestone Connection provides musical interludes. The original artwork of Manzar will be on display, and you can help yourself to free wine and refreshments. Plus, open mic offers the opportunity for you to show us what you’ve got.

Lit and Art at Baltimore Book Fest’s CityLit Stage

It’s that time of year—time for the annual Baltimore Book Festival. This year’s festival, taking place on September 26, 27, and 28, features such authors and personalities as Kwame Alexander, Laura Shovan, John McCain, Lalita Noronha, and Wes Moore.

In what’s become a long-standing tradition, the Lit and Art Reading Series will host an hour of readings at the CityLit Stage on Sunday, September 28 from 2 to 3 p.m.  Guess who’s with us this year?

Holly Morse-Ellington has published essays and photographs with Wanderlust and Lipstick, Matador Network, Three Quarter Review, Baltimore Fishbowl, Outside In Literary & Travel Magazine, Urbanite, The Journal of Homeland Security, The Washington Times, and elsewhere. She and Jason Tinney co-authored the play, Fifty Miles Away, winner of Frostburg Center for Creative Writing’s 2015 One Act Festival. They perform together as Limestone Connection. Holly is also an editor for Baltimore Review.

Aaron Henkin has produced The Signal on WYPR for the past 11 years. His work has aired nationally on NPR’s Morning Edition, All Things Considered, PRI’s Studio 360, & The World. His current project is a documentary series called, Out of the Blocks. Aaron also teaches at MICA and UMBC, and he plays the drums in The Barnyard Sharks.


Richard Peabody is the founder and co-editor of Gargoyle Magazine and editor (or co-editor) of 23 anthologies including Mondo Barbie, Conversations with Gore Vidal, and A Different Beat: Writings by Women of the Beat Generation. The author of a novella, three short story collections, and seven poetry books, he is also a native Washingtonian. Peabody taught fiction writing at Johns Hopkins University for 15 years. His new book is The Richard Peabody Reader (Alan Squire Publishers, 2015).

Manzar Rassouli was born in Tehran, Iran. Her work’s been exhibited throughout the country and around the world. The Watermark Gallery in Baltimore houses her permanent collection.

Jason Tinney is the author of Ripple Meets the Deep, Louise Paris and Other Waltzes, and Bluebird and has been a contributor to several publications, including Baltimore, Style, Urbanite, and Maryland Life. As an actor, he has appeared in more than 30 stage productions. He and Holly Morse-Ellington co-authored the play, Fifty Miles Away, which won first prize in the 2015 One Act Festival sponsored by the Frostburg Center for Creative Writing. They perform together as Limestone Connection.


Gregg Wilhelm founded the literary arts organization CityLit Project in 2004 and serves as publisher of its CityLit Press imprint.  He has worked for several independent presses and has taught writing and publishing courses at several universities. In 2014, Gregg earned an MFA from the University of Tampa and won a Rubys Artists Project Grant from the Greater Baltimore Cultural Alliance. www.GreggWilhelm.com.


Eric D. Goodman is co-founder and co-curator of the Lit & Art Reading Series. He’s a Baltimore author who writes about trains, animals, wombs, and more. Visit him at www.EricDGoodman.com.

Started in 2007, the Lit & Art Reading Series takes place five times a year at the Watermark Gallery at 100 South Charles Street on the second floor of the Bank of America building across from Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. The program features artists who represent various literary genres combined with visual art. 

Manzar, of the Watermark Gallery, will have a booth this year with information about the gallery, her art, Lit & Art, Rumi, and more. Be sure to stop by the booth!

Limestone Connection will share blues and folk-inspired originals and covers, with Jason Tinney at the harmonica and Holly Morse-Ellington at the ukulele. Manzar’s original art will be on display. To hold it all together, we’ll enjoy wine, refreshments, and conversation among like-minded artists.
 
Like all Lit and Art events, it is free and open to the public. So come along and bring some friends!
 
Hosted by Baltimore authors Nitin Jagdish and Eric D. Goodman, the events are casual and meant to foster the local literary community. In fact, we encourage attendees to bring about five minutes of their own work to share during open mic!

A 2015 Full of Lit and Art


With the new year comes a brand new lineup of talent brought to you by the Lit and Art Reading Series at the Watermark Gallery.

The first event comes on the last Sunday of January: Sunday, January 25 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Watermark, 100 S. Charles Street, right across from Baltimore’s Inner Harbor.

For the January event, our featured talent includes CL Bledsoe, Margo Christie, Sid Gold, Charles Rammelkamp, and Sally Whitney.
 
Limestone Connection will share blues and folk-inspired originals and covers, with Jason Tinney at the harmonica and Holly Morse-Ellington at the ukulele.
 
Manzar’s original art will be on display. To hold it all together, we’ll enjoy wine, refreshments, and conversation among like-minded artists.

Like all Lit and Art events, it is free and open to the public. So come along and bring some friends!

Last Lit and Art of the Year


Last month, the Lit and Art Reading Series took its place once again at the Baltimore Book Festival—the Mid-Atlantic Region’s biggest literary celebration! We were hosted by the CityLit Stage—the hottest stage of the festival! Featured talent included Tom Glenn, Eric D. Goodman, Holly Morse-Ellington, Nitin Jagdish, Nathan Leslie, and Liz Moser. The event was emceed by NPR’s Aaron Henkin, whose program “The Signal” takes listeners on a weekly tour of Baltimore’s cultural landscape.

But we’re not ones to dwell on the past. Let’s look to the future.

Lit and Art is known for fiction, poetry, nonfiction, music, and art. This time around, we’re throwing a short play into the mix.

More than Just Lit and Art

The next event in the Lit and Art Reading Series takes place on Sunday, March 30 at The Watermark Gallery. As always, it includes a diverse selection of featured readers, live music, original art, wine and refreshments, and the opportunity to mix and mingle with the local literary and arts community.

But this month’s Lit & Art is more than that. It is also a celebration of Persian New Year. And the closing reception of Manzar’s art exhibit, “Women West, Women East & Global Peace.”
The event takes place from 2 to 5 p.m. and may go longer if you want to stay to enjoy the celebration with Persian music, food and entertainment.
Our Featured readers in March are William Patrick Tandy, Julie Fisher, Sam J. Schmidt, g emil rutter and Diane Sahms Gaurnieri with music by Pop-Grass Banjo Dude Jacob Panic.
The art exhibit celebrates women from the east and the west and expresses a desire for world peace. “I hope in the near future we will have more wise women involved in politics,” said Manzar. “I believe this will lead us to a more peaceful world.”
Manzar, a resident of Baltimore, will be at the opening reception to talk about her work. She was born in Tehran, Iran. She has exhibited her work throughout the country and around the world.
“I strive for peace and beauty in all my works,” said Manzar, who also coordinates a “Teach Your Heart with Art” workshop.
The Watermark Gallery is located on the second floor of the Bank of America Building at 100 South Charles Street across from Baltimore’s Inner Harbor.

An Event Bridging the Arts

This week an article was published in The Examiner about how the Lit and Art Reading Series bridges the arts. 

That's because every Lit and Art event brings together fiction, poetry, nonfiction, live music, original art, wine, refreshments, and conversation. The events take place several times every year at The Watermark Gallery, 100 South Charles Street across from Baltimore's Inner Harbor.

Hot Poetry Sets Grass on Fire

This Sunday’s Lit & Art at the Watermark is sure to be a scorcher. That’s because poets featured in the anthology Life in Me Like Grass on Fire will set the event ablaze with their poetry. Fourteen of the fifty poets featured in the anthology will share their work.


The event takes place at the Watermark Gallery in downtown Baltimore from
2 to 5 p.m.


Returning Lit & Art poets include Fernando Quijano III, Ann Bracken, and Liz Moser.

Making their Lit & Art debut are poets Laura Shovan, Margaret Mullins, Judith Goedeke, Kat Hellen, Allan Roy Andrews, Janice Lynch Schuster, Danuta Kosk-Kosicka, Regina Sokas, Tapendu Basu, Shirley Brewer, and Adele Steiner.

Songwriter Goodloe Byron will provide original music. Manzar will share her original artwork.

Celebrate Beginning of the End with Lit and Art

Unsure what to do if the Rapture passes you by on May 21? No problem! The Watermark Gallery will hold its next Lit and Art event on Sunday, May 22, at 2 p.m. Help us ring in the last 153 days of existence in grand style!

Three writers will debut at this event: D.R. Belz, Steve Himmer, and Elisavietta Ritchie. Joining them will be Lit & Art mainstays Eric D. Goodman and Red Tractor Factory.
