TRACKS at Baltimore Book Fest

In case you didn't hear it on Baltimore's NPR station, WTMD, or read it in Baltimore's City Paper, I'm reading from TRACKS, my novel in stories, this weekend at the Baltimore Book Festival -- the mid-Atlantic's premier celebration of the literary arts.

The Write Here Write Now reading takes place at the City Lit Tent. I'll be reading an abridged version of the story "A Good Beer Needs a Good Stein" on Sunday, October 1 at 11 a.m. and will be joined by five other local writers: Judy Turner, Nancy Greene, Paul Lagasse, Barbara Friedland and Fernando Quijano. Christine Stewart hosts the event.

Other featured authors during the three-day festival include Sebastian Junger, James McGreevey, Moria Egan, Kate Dolan, and Nathan Leslie.

This is the first public reading from TRACKS, a novel in stories. To learn more, visit the Baltimore Book Festival website.

NPR on The Brave Work of Writing

Last weekend, Baltimore's WTMD (the local NPR station) broadcast an episode of Clear Reception with Sheri Parks on the brave work of writing. The hour-long program began with film producer Christine Vachone, and Sujata Massey. Then, Sheri interviewed Gregg Wilhelm of the City Lit Project and Christine Stewart, Creative Alliance writer-in-residence on the Write Here, Write Now Project.

When discussing the "Baltimore voice" and emerging writers in the area, they mentioned some of us reading at the Baltimore Book Festival this weekend: Judy Turner, Nancy Greene, Paul Lagasse, Barbara Friedland, Fernando Quijano III and Eric D. Goodman.

Don't Miss the Festivities

Lovers of Literature won't want to miss next weekend's Baltimore Book Festival, touted as the mid-Atlantic's premier celebration of the literary arts. Featured authors include Sebastian Junger (A Death in Belmont, The Perfect Storm), former Governer James McGreevey, Washington Writers' Publishing House Author Moria Egan, historical factionalist Kate Dolan, and short story writer Nathan Leslie.

Not to mention a different sort of Sunday morning reading at the CityLit Stage, featuring local authors Christine Stewart, Judy Turner, Paul Lagasse, Nancy Greene, Barbara Friedland, Fernando Quijano III, and Eric D. Goodman.

Literary agents and first-time authors will offer advice to writers. The editor-in-cheif of Cosmo and the man behind Sesame Street's Elmo will be present. Even local filmmaker John Waters will be in attendance. And be sure not to miss Friday night's Books and Brew.

The festival runs all weekend, Friday, September 29 to Sunday, October 1.

Podcasting for Writers

Writers often seem to be the last to notice market changes. Sure, a number of writers have blogs now -- but what's next? The answer, according to the folks at Write and Publish Your Book, is multi-media: Podcasting, Videocasting, and Virtual Book Tours are the next big thing in marketing for writers. But, what's a Podcast, and how do you create one?

There's an easy way to find out. The experts at Write and Publish Your Book are holding a teleseminar series these advanced marketing techniques. The first hour-long session will be held on October 25th at 9:00 p.m. and will cover the basics.

Visit their Podcast page for more information and to register for this teleconference.

"Surprise" Story Published

Earlier this summer, I hit the field and did some research for a non-fiction story. That is, I drove to the mid-west, went to the first two shows in Paul Simon's "Surprise" tour and wrote a story about the experience.

The feature, "Surprise Pilgrimage: Hitting the Road in Search of Paul Simon's America," has been published in The Neck of My Guitar. Right now, it's the top story under "Newspaper Articles."

Visit the Simon site to check it out -- just don't call me a fanatic.
