Welcome to Our House for Lit & Art at the Historic York Inn

Our house is in the middle of Beaver Street, at the center of activity for the City of York's First Friday Festivities.

Join us as The Lit and Art Reading Series returns to The Historic York Inn in the Smyser-Bair House for an evening of mansion tours, refreshments, poetry and literary readings, live music, and lively conversation. The event takes place on Friday, October 5 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Featured poetry and fiction readers will include Warren Barrett, CL Bledsoe, Barbara DeCesare, Tracy Diamond, Lucrecia Gurrero, Jerry Holt, and Fernando Quijano III, with live music by Robin Chadderton and original art by Manzar. Eric D. Goodman and Nitin Jagdish curate and host. 

Tours will be offered on the hour by Birkshire Hathaway: step back in time for a tour through history, with hand-carved, gilded Pier mirrors, stained glass, etched glass, hand plasterwork, woodwork, and chandeliers that rival those found in museums. Anchored in York’s historic district since the 1830s, and belonging to the Smyser-Bair family until 1979 (when it was left to the York Historical Trust before becoming a private inn) this home is a rich part of York's history, recently featured in front page news and on national television for its historic charm. 

It's all part of the City of York's First Friday festivities.

Viva Smyser-Bair! Music, Margaritas, Readings This Friday!

TheSmyser-Bair House / Historic York Inn,  Berkshire Hathaway, and the Lit And Art Reading Series invite you celebrate Cinco de Mayo in style this First Friday in this historic mansion from the 1830s in the heart of the revitalized South Beaver Street block of downtwon York’s historic district.

The evening will include free snacks, margaritas, a beer tasting, palatial tours, original art, and a full program of readings by local and regional authors from the York and Baltimore areas. Not to mention original artwork by Manzar and live music by Red Sammy.

Featured poets and authors include Barbara DeCeasar, Sid Gold, Sam Schmidt, Laura Shovan, Nitin Jagdish, and Eric D. Goodman.

The free event takes place at 30 South Beaver Street as a part of Downtown York’s First Friday festivities from 6 to 9 p.m. on May 5!

Enjoy house margaritas and accompanying finger foods in the palatial parlor and formal dining room, surrounded by gilded Pier mirrors, breathtaking wood and plaster work, and electrified chandeliers. Pick up a book, painting, or CD from a local or regional author, artist, or musician—and get it personally inscribed or autographed.

Holiday Book Bazaar, Tree Lighting, York First Friday

The Lit and Art Reading Series and The Smyser-Bair House / Historic York Inn invites you to join us for the York Holiday Book Bazaar in association with City of York’s First Friday and the lighting of the city’s holiday tree. 

The Holiday Book Bazaar takes place at 30 South Beaver Street from 6 to 9 p.m.

Live music will be performed by Limestone Connection and Red Sammy.

Interspersed with the music will be readings by regional authors, artwork by regional artists, and the opportunity to talk with the authors, musicians, and artists and have them sign their books, CDs and artwork for you.

Free refreshments, snacks, cocktails, wine, and beer will be available, including a beer tasting will offered by Brewery Products.

York First Fridays Harvest Festivities at the Historic York Inn

TheSmyser-Bair House / Historic York Inn invites you to join us for an evening of homemade food, drinks, palatial tours, live music, original art, and local literature at 30 South Beaver Street as a part of Downtown York’s First Friday festivities from 5 to 9 p.m. on October 7!

Berkshire-Hathaway will offer complete tours of the 1830s mansion, The Smyser-Bair House / Historic York Inn. Step back in time for a tour through history, with hand-carved, gilded Pier mirrors, stained glass, etched glass, hand plasterwork, woodwork, and chandeliers that rival those found in museums. Anchored in the historic district since the 1830s, and belonging to the Smyser-Bair family until 1979 (when it was left to the York Historical Trust before becoming a private inn) this home is a rich part of York's history, recently featured in front page news and on national television for its historic charm.

Limestone Connection, a band from Baltimore made up of Holly Morse-Ellington (on ukulele and vocals) and Jason Tinney (on harmonica), will play live music.

Eric D. Goodman and Nataliya Goodman will sign copies of their books, Flightless Goose, a storybook for children, and Tracks: A Novel in Stories. Flightless Goose was endorsed by one of the founding writers for Sesame Street. Tracks won the Gold Medal for best fiction in the Mid-Atlantic Region from the Independent Publishers Book Awards.

Jason Tinney will sign copies of his novel, Ripple Meets the Deep. Ripple Meets the Deep was named best book of Baltimore by Baltimore Magazine.

A free beer tasting will be offered by Brewery Products.

Snacks, hot food, spiced drinks and spiked drinks will be there for the taking.
