Pick Your Reading Event

It’s about choice. This Wednesday, there are two great reading events. But unless you’re a really fast driver, you can only attend one. Here they are.

Anne Patchett at Goucher

Goucher College’s Kratz Center for Creative Writing presents Ann Patchett — the award-winning author of the novel Bel Canto — on Wednesday, September 29 at 8 p.m. in Kraushaar Auditorium. Patchett will read from her works, answer questions, and sign copies of her books.

The event is free and open to the public, but tickets must be reserved in advance by calling 410-337-6333 or by emailing boxoffice@goucher.edu.

For more information, see Goucher’s announcement at http://www.goucher.edu/x40818.xml.

Readings from Baltimore

Celebrate the new CityLit Project-University of Baltimore partnership at the "Readings from Baltimore" program on Wednesday, September 29 from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m.

It's part of grand opening series of events at the new Barnes & Noble on the campus of the University of Baltimore (at the corner of Mt. Royal and Oliver) and is intended to be a brief sampling of the different writers, writing programs, and reading series happening around town. We have nine guests and 90 minutes, including John Barry, Raven Ekundayo, Michael Kimball, Kimberley Lynne, Susan-McCallum-Smith, Jen Michalski, Michael Salcman, Jennifer Wallace, and Elissa Weissman.

Lit & Art Returns to Baltimore Book Fest

This weekend is the 15th edition of the Mid-Atlantic’s biggest literary event: the Baltimore Book Festival. Three days of readings, music, readings, food, literary panels and discussions, and readings. The festivities begin on Friday, September 24 and continue through Sunday, September 25.

The regular Lit & Art Reading Series travels north from its usual meeting place at the Watermark Gallery for a second annual event at the Baltimore Book Festival. This year’s Lit & Art at the BBF is hosted by the CityLit Tent. It takes place from at 2 p.m. this Sunday, September 26.

Readers include Lauren Beth Eisenberg, B. Morrison, Fernando Quijano III, and Eric D. Goodman. The Watermark Gallery’s Manzar will display her original art and give a performance. Live music is provided by the Lit & Art house band, Red Tractor Factory.

The Baltimore Book Festival offers something for everyone. Whether you want to meet Jessie Ventura or learn about Wes Moore One and Wes Moore Two, this is the place to be this weekend.

Back from CA, off to Ox-Bow!

I’ve been touring California for the past two weeks, attending a conference in San Francisco and fitting in the sights on the side, visiting San Jose (where I was born) and Monterey (where I lived) and Los Angeles (Hollywood, Santa Monica, Burbank, Beverley Hills, etc.). I even took a pilgrimage to Salinas to John Steinbeck’s boyhood home and the National Steinbeck Center. But I’ll have to write about those experiences later.

After two weeks away from home and two days back, I’m hitting the road again. This time, for my two-week residency at Ox-Bow.

You can read more about Ox-Bow in my last post. In a nutshell, it’s a modern-day Walden. I’ll be the only writer-in-residence in a community of artists coming from around the world and sharing in a two-week residency. The 115-acre sanctuary for artists has been promoting art, thought, and discussion for 100 years. Fed on wholesome local food and the inspirational scenery, we’ll each be given time to immerse ourselves in our work and share a bit of it with one another.

Learn more about Ox-Bow at the following link. And wish me luck as I write there in the coming weeks!
