Writing Advice from William Kennedy

Years ago, I had the pleasure of meeting William Kennedy at a literary conference in Maryland. He was the headliner, I was doing PR for the event. I enjoyed talking with him during a welcoming reception, and then benefited from his keynote address the following day at the conference. We even enjoyed a screening of Ironweed, for which he wrote both the novel and the screenplay. Here are some key pieces of advice he shared:

  • Embrace Your Roots: Kennedy emphasizes the importance of writing about familiar places. He believes that a deep connection to one's setting enriches the narrative, allowing for authentic and vivid storytelling.
  • Persistence in Craft: He advises writers to continually refine their work, focusing on clarity and precision. Kennedy's own journey underscores the value of revisiting and honing one's writing to achieve its full potential.
  • Learn from the Masters: Kennedy recommends reading interviews and works of esteemed authors to gain diverse perspectives and insights into the writing process. This practice can offer valuable lessons and inspiration.
