Loving Lit Mags with Atticus Books

A popular 2013 release from my publisher, Atticus Books, is Paper Dreams: Writers and Editors on the American Literary Magazine.  It’s all about literary magazines and what makes them work.

In an effort to share the love of literary journals, Atticus has been publishing an ongoing “Loving Lit Mags” column on the Atticus Blog. Recently, they published my own “Beyond Academia,” in which I share some local and national journals that I enjoy contributing to and reading.

Become a part of the conversation and fall in love with lit mags. Find out some of my favorites at the Atticus Blog.

Soak in Hot Beer with Me

Like beer? Then you’ll enjoy reading about the Chodovar Beer Spa in Czech Republic.

GoNOMAD, one of the most popular online travel magazines for readers bitten by the travel bug, recently published my feature article, “Steeped in Beer in Chodova Plana,” along with some of my travel photos.

“Chodova Plana is a quaint little village out in the forest in a region surrounded by hot springs. It takes us about 15 minutes to make it through the country roads, spotting what look like summer homes along the way, to our destination: Chodovar—a historic brewery dating back to the 14th century.”

While there, we soaked in hot tubs full of beer, drank beer, were wrapped in beer-drenched linens, and even topped our visit off with a stop by Plzen—the birthplace of beer.

At a reading earlier this week I shared my story from Tracks called “A Good Beer Needs a Good Stein.” As I learned during this day trip during a visit to Prague, sometimes a good beer needs a whole bathtub.

Join me in a beer at GoNOMAD.

One Week, Two Literary Events, Seven Authors

This week, I’m pleased to be participating in two literary events with some fine writers.

On Monday, November 11, I’ll be joined by Jen Michalski, Cort Bledsoe, and Lawrence-Mihn Bui Davis at Northern Virginia Community College for their Loudoun Campus Literary Festival in Sterling, Virginia. The event begins at 7 p.m. in LC 209 and will include readings from our books followed by a panel discussion on our work, writing methods, and the publishing industry. As host and author Nathan Leslie states, “This is a very impressive array of writers and editors.” Learn more at the NOVA website: http://www.nvcc.edu/calendar/EventList.aspx?view=EventDetails&eventidn=5017&information_id=17267&type=&rss=rss

On Wednesday, November 13, I’ll be a featured reader at the first “Write On, Baltimore” event at The Evergreen Café, 501 Cold Spring Land, Baltimore, MD 21210. The event takes place from 6 to 8 p.m. and food discounts are part of the free event. Here is more information from the Write On, Baltimore event page on Facebook:

Be a part of the Baltimore Writing Experience! Join us for a free open mic reading, featuring Jack B. Downs, Eric D. Goodman, Barbara Morrison, and Justin Sirois. Bring your writing to read during the open mic (four minutes per reader). Writers, readers, innocent bystanders: all are welcome.

This is a great opportunity to hear Baltimore writers and support a local business. Writers: come meet fellow writers and share what you are working on, maybe that rough novel you are laboring over for National Novel Writing Month. Evergreen features Zeke's coffee, magnificent gelatos and yummy sandwiches and salads.

Join the event on Facebook, view the poster, or learn more at https://www.facebook.com/events/587102884659096/

At both events, I’ll be reading from Tracks: A Novel in Stories and talking about writing and publishing. After six weeks as a juror, it’s nice to get back into the literary scene!
